I am considering buying a Kubota L3130 fst fwd (manual Transmission-syncromesh) with r4 industrial tires-(filled) with the LA723 Loader, 72in heavy duty bucket with replacable cutting edge-not quick detach. Is this enough tractor for a 40 acre parcel all wooded very hilly some wetland crossings-will be clearing about 5 acres to start moving sand and loam filling low spots, cutting a driveway and eventually keeping it clear with a rotary cutter. I also may consider adding a Woods or Kubota Backhoe in the future. Also how much should I be paying for this tractor

I have a 41 hp for 18 acres, plus I hog mow another 22 acre parcel down the road. My tractor also has the Bradco 511 hoe, which is used a lot. I would prefer to go bigger if I had the opportunity. If I did, it would be the L 48 Kubota.. I think I would listen to whatever Art White says as he is a delaer of many lines and been in this a long, long time., ....

I paid $19,300 for an L3130HST, AG tires, 723 loader. HD bucket w/detachable edge. Dealer list HST is about $1600 more than FST and R-4's about $900 more than R-1's, so if you get it for less you got a better deal than me. ( But shipping etc can affect dealer costs )
I chose HST for: ease of use, reliability ( no expen$ive clutch change$) and the use of a rear snowblower. Like the infinite speed feature of HST (at the cost of a couple of horsepower) and R-1's for traction. You may not be happy with R-4's in the wet and mud.
Figure about 3 buckets per yard of fill. How far do you have to move it? How quickly do you have to complete the work?
The GST has 12Fx8R speeds, FST 8Fx8R speeds. Does this give you the flexibility you need in your hilly environment? Lots of info if you check out the different forums. You might see what deal you can get on a rear weight box if you don't plan to build one yourself.
I would have liked to go larger, but drew the line at what I figured would be necessary for my tasks.

I think you could do fine with that size tractor. You will have some pto work later and that would be the only real place that a higher horsepower would be very noticeable other then climbing your hills. To dig or grade the additonal horsepower would not be noticed as much as extra weight would from a larger tractor chassis. It sounds like you might even be happy with an L-4300 Kubota. The glideshift is a little less money then the hydro and I do believe the hydro is the best for loader work and mowing in tight quarters but I don't know that you would like it on the hills. ....

Art, thanks to you and others responding to my Aug. 5 "ready to jump in," I think I've pretty much settled on 3130 with either hydro or glideshift. Now i'm wondering if you would elaborate a little on your reference to glideshift being preferable to hydro on hills. I'm assuming the hydro would get me anywhere the glideshift would, just maybe with not as much load?? ....

That is it in a nutshell. To change range with a hydro you do need to stop. You could shift a glideshift any where or time even though it is not recommended to shift it or any transmission while going up or down hills. The glideshift will deliver more horsepower to the ground then the hydro. ....
